I was in a photography show at Safelight Labs this past weekend, and it was amazing! I really downplayed it, because I haven't been in any shows since college, and I honestly didn't think it would be a big deal. But I felt pretty stupid for thinking that way once I was at the show.
I loved every minute of it. I felt like the community was coming together. As a whole, but also just my community. I guess I didn't realize the support system I had until people showed up for me AND purchased my work.
Below: Me gushing in front of my work. lol
Below: My family happened to be in town, so they got to come to the show!!!
HUGE Thank You to Ellie Nichols for being my model for this project. All of the images below were taken in my apartment in East Village. I wanted to incorporate newspapers in every shot. 3 of them are photos, and 2 of them are mixed media where the actual newspaper is added in on top of the photo.
I went to college for PhotoJournalism. I wanted to photograph and report on hard-hitting news... but I quickly realized with Facebook becoming the new news source that print was going to die, and my dreams of being a reporter for a newspaper died with that realization. I also realized I really didn't enjoy reading or even watching the news, because it was depressing and oftentimes felt one-sided.
I pivoted to an interdisciplinary major with a focus still on journalism but also on art and creative writing. From there, came a desire to shoot editorial photography. I want to tell a story with an image. It doesn't have to be "news"... just a story. So that's what I've been doing, and that's kind of what this project was about. I was finally saying goodbye to the news reporter wannabe side of me and hello to the artist side of me.
I love what I do. Creating these 5 photographs for the sake of art and no other reason was truly liberating. Thank you so much everyone who came to support me. I truly felt a spark in me that I haven't felt in a very long time. I think I'll have to make this happen again in the future.
The 5 images below are all part of the series "Newsworthy."
Thank you so much Rob Cowan of SafeLight Labs for asking me to be a part of this showcase.
Thank you Ellie Nichols for trusting the vision and being an amazing model!
Thank you everyone who came out to support me and the other women in this show!
